Obscure? No way!

You may wonder why 1981? Well, 1981 was a great year for some of us, if you can think back that far.

In 1981 I experienced the best gig ever : Bruce Springsteen at Wembley Arena - 3 and 3 quarter hours of life-afirming music; the best film ever : Abel Gance's 1928 silent 3 hour masterpiece Napoleon - restored by Kevin Brownlow and played in Leicester Square with a live orchestra conducted by Carl Davis - split screen too; the best stage play ever : the RSC's Nicholas Nickelby at the Aldwych - we went to the first complete preview of 8 hours - 4 in the afternoon and 4 at night, and director Trevor Nunn and adaptorr David Edgar were still working on it - a ten minute standing ovation at midnight; and the start of the best TV series ever: Hill Street Blues - it wasn't shown in the UK until 1982, but it was well under way in 1981. It was a very good year....
